marilynandbob > Bosque del Apache, in southern New Mexico, is a winter refuge for migrating birds, in particular, Sand Hill Cranes and various geese. They live here from Nov-Feb, when they fly back north. This photo shows the "Flight Deck", an area where photographers also migrate to seasonally, in order to "shoot" the birds early in the mornings when they have a mass ascention--- they all take off at once, amid loud cries and sounds of wings flapping and a huge wind they create with their wings, and the sight of these hundreds/thousands of birds against the sunrise is just spectacular. Can you find Bob? He's right in the center of this photo.
marilynandbob > Just a sense of the amazing number of birds at this refuge. You see mostly Snow Geese, but there are some Sand Hill Cranes.
marilynandbob > Snow geese flying in the New Mexico sky.
marilynandbob > Snow geese ready to land
marilynandbob > Huge take-off from a field at Bosque. That's Bob's hand and lens.
marilynandbob > The National Park Service plants corn (and other grains) which they "knock back" gradually through the winter, providing food for the wintering birds. They eat during the day, here and in neighboring fields, then return to the refuge overnight, where they sleep out in the water to avoide predation by coyotes.
marilynandbob > We travelled with our bicycles- Bob got a little ride in; Marilyn's got an immediate flat tire (big old thorn). Note the birds in the field and the photographers parked along the road. They birds just totally ignore all the shutters clicking.
marilynandbob > As we drive around, Bob is able to get some good shots with his window-mounted tripod.
marilynandbob > Sitting in the truck provides a terrific view of the birds. Rafiki really enjoyed watching them, too. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
